Deaf Literacy Nova Scotia

What is ASL Literacy?

Being able to understand and use ASL:

  • Includes having experiences and knowledge of Deaf culture
  • Good ASL literacy is essential to good English literacy
  • Deaf people will feel good about themselves and more interested in the world around them

THANKS to Joanne Cripps and Anita Small, who have made ASL Literacy more well-known in Canada by setting up the Ladder Awards! The Ladder Awards encourage Deaf people in Canada to tell stories in ASL or write stories or draw pictures for children’s books.
