What is Deaf Culture?

Language

  • Uses American Sign Language (ASL) with strong regional signs (also called Old Signs or Maritime Sign Language)

Values (feelings or opinions):

  • Uses ASL, not signed English
  • Includes Deaf friends or Deaf groups for social and emotional support
  • Believes in visual communication more than oral communication for Deaf children
